Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy is a traditional form of deep tissue massage treatment that uses specially designed cups to treat a number of conditions. The practice has origins in ancient Far Eastern medicine.

Cupping Therapy is performed by placing cups onto the skin by way of either heat or suction. Underlying tissue is then drawn into the cups which are then left in pace on the skin for a short period of time.

The traditional Chinese practitioners of Cupping Therapy believe that it affects the body's tissue at a depth of up to four inches, thus releasing toxins from the tissue, clearing blockages and activating the lymphatic system.

Cupping Therapy is claimed to relieve a plethora of ailments including blood disorders, inflammatory conditions, mental anxiety and varicose veins, as well as maintaining and promoting general well-being.

Cupping Therapy is a very simple practice that can be quickly and easily learnt and adapted for use in the home, most specialist Chinese medicine shops and some general health stores will be able to supply the basic equipment needed and instruction on how to correctly and safely apply the cups.

In short the cups should be applied to the affected area of skin for a period of around fifteen minutes; the application should then be repeated daily for a period of ten days before a five-day rest period is undertaken. Cupping therapy is thought to be totally safe for most people although small red marks are likely to appear on the skin following treatment.
